Streets for People

"Streets for People" is a Transport for London (TfL) scheme that sets out to "..improve the image, accessibility, pedestrian ease of movement and safety, and deliveries within a specified area and its hinterland..".  Ealing Council has secured TfL Streets for People funding for Pitshanger Lane.

Pitshanger Voice Discussion: information and opinions on the Streets for People scheme.

PCA Consultation Report: full details of the results of a consultation exercise carried out by the PCA, including an analysis of nearly 500 questionnaire responses and a number of recommendations to Ealing Council for the way forward.

Update 1 Dec 07: Ealing Council has launched the full public consultation on the Pitshanger Lane Streets for People scheme, with consultation material consisting of a leaflet and a questionnaire.  The Council has arranged for the consultation documents to be delivered to properties in an area stretching N-S from Meadvale Road to Mount Road/Castlebar Hill and E-W from Brentham Way to Kent Avenue.

Update 12 Dec 07: the PCA recommends a vote in favour of the scheme overall.  However, there are important details missing from the Council’s proposals. The PCA will be pressing strongly for further involvement in fine tuning the scheme once it has been approved in principle by Ealing Council.  For further information about what the PCA thinks is good, neutral and bad about the Council's final Streets for People proposals, see the December 07 newsletter here.

Update 22 Jan 08: Ealing Council have published the results of the public consultation on the Pitshanger Lane Streets for People scheme, for discussion by the Ealing Area Committee.  The results are presented as Main Body, Appendix 1 and Appendix 2.  The headline results are 77% in favour of the scheme as a whole, with a marked preference for tree-saving options.  But a lot of important detail is still missing.

Update 23 Jan 08: The Council's Ealing Area Committee has given the go ahead for the Pitshanger Lane Streets for People scheme to proceed to detailed design and implementation.  The PCA and Ward Councillors will have a role in ensuring the details are right.

Update 19 Mar 08:  A meeting attended by the PCA, the Cleveland Ward Councillors, Council Officers and MVA Consultancy agreed a number of detailed improvements to the Pitshanger Lane Streets for People scheme as it stood after the public consultation exercise.  The main changes are (a) proper loading arrangements for the two Coop stores, (b) separation of the two bus stops and (c) inclusion of a dedicated disabled parking bay.  Other features such as the road safety improvements near North Ealing Primary School remain unchanged.  The scheme will now proceed to detailed design by the Council Highways Department and their contractors.

Update 30 Apr 08:  The Streets for People plan incorporating the design changes agreed at the meeting on 19 Mar 08 (see above) is now available for download here.  This plan shows only the central part of Pitshanger Lane.  However, we have been told by Ealing Council that the road safety improvements for North Ealing Primary are still included, albeit off the edge of the available plan.

Update 21 May 08:  The PCA has published a Streets for People supplement with the Newsletter for May 2008.  The supplement provides a reminder of what the scheme is all about and answers a number of popular questions.  The Streets for People Newsletter Supplement is available here.

Update 22 May 08:  Just received from Ealing Council, a plan showing the wider area design for the Streets for People scheme is available for download here.  Among other things, the wider area plan shows the road safety improvements in the vicinity of North Ealing Primary School.

The Pitshanger Lane Streets for People story has be tracked from the outset in the PCA Newsletter.
