Two big dates to note in our thriving local music scene are St Barnabas Chopin Festival on May 11th and 12th, and the St Barnabas Summer Proms from Sat 20th July to Friday 9th August.
The St Barnabas Chopin Festival will take place from 2.30pm to 6.00 pm and from 7pm to 10pm on both the 11th and 12th May. 21 distinguished pianists, including many prizewinners from international piano competitions will give short recitals of 20 to 30 minutes each, including virtually all the most famous Chopin works. Admission is £12 per session, or £40 for the whole festival (4 sessions), with half price for young people under 16. No tickets will be issued beforehand – just turn up on the day. The church is large and admission is guaranteed. Full details are available via www.barnabites.org/chopinfestival.
Turning to film now, Pitshanger Pictures continues its lively programme on 4th May with ‘The Aristocats’ for the 3:00pm matinee and ‘The Queen’ for the 7:30pm evening show. Then on Monday 13th ‘Gran Torino’ starring Clint Eastwood in one of his most endearing roles. Monday the 27th finishes off May with the outstanding ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ starring the delectable Audrey Hepburn. No announcement yet about resuming the regular Opera Films (halted due to licencing issues) but keep an eye out for updates on the Pitshanger Pictures web site www.barnabites.org/social/pitshanger-pictures.
